Gifted and Talented

A. Process to Assess and Identify Students for Participation in Gifted and Talented Programs includes:

  1. Classroom assessment and MCA reading scores are the multiple and objective criteria used to identify the top six students in grades 4 & 5 that participate in reading enrichment with the Gifted and Talented teacher. Both low income and minority students have equal access with all students to be selected for the book clubs.

B. Acceleration Procedures for Academic Acceleration of Gifted and Talented Students include:

  1. Assessment of the individual student’s readiness and motivation for acceleration and

  2. Matching the level, complexity and pace of the curriculum to a student to achieve the appropriate academic acceleration for the individual. Teachers adapt the curriculum based on student needs either to remediate or accelerate, whichever appropriately meets student needs.

Access to Excellent and Diverse Teachers

  • The process we used for ensuring students of color, American Indian students, and students from low income families have equitable access to experienced, infield and effective teachers was to review the data under “who works here” (staffing profiles) for our district. We also compared our data with the state data.

  • 26% of our students receive free and reduced price meals, which is considered a low poverty district compared to 36% of students in districts statewide.

  • 65% of our teachers are experienced educators according to the data compared to 88% of the educators in low poverty districts statewide.

  • 100% of our educators have a license or permission in subject areas or courses being taught compared to 95% at the statewide level.

  • 31% of our teachers have advanced degrees compared with 62% at the state level.  Many of our teachers are working toward advanced degrees.
